After three years of training, we were no longer trainee guides but interns. Mandla and I traded our shared room at the Wilderness Leadership School headquarters for separate cottages, still on the campus but about a hundred metres from the main office. This was liberating for us – in our old room, we had always felt as if we were at work, or at boarding school. Now we could play music freely, and have visitors.

As we were now interns, we began to conduct trails, as either backup guides or trail leaders. Many of the first trails we led were with learners from wealthy schools in the cities. There are three of these in particular that I recall.
